Archive Converter
Repack an archive into the format the person or system on the other end can open: RAR or 7z into ZIP for a coworker, a ZIP into TAR.GZ for a Linux server, a Mac DMG into an ISO. The files inside stay exactly as they were.

Each archive format grew out of a different world. TAR dates from Version 7 Unix in 1979 and was built to write files to tape, so it bundles without compressing; gzip (1992), bzip2 (1996) and xz (2009) were later layered on top. RAR, created by Eugene Roshal in 1993, remains proprietary to RARLAB. 7z arrived with Igor Pavlov's 7-Zip in 1999 and its open LZMA compression. ISO 9660, the file system of CD-ROM images, was standardized in 1988, and DMG is Apple's own disk image format for macOS.
Converting means reading one of these and writing another. The most requested direction by far is toward ZIP, because it opens everywhere: RAR to ZIP for downloads and email attachments, 7z to ZIP for 7-Zip files, and TAR.GZ to ZIP for source code and server backups that need to open on Windows. The reverse, ZIP to RAR, is for people who want RAR's recovery records or solid compression.
Which archive conversion do you need?
You received a RAR or 7z
Convert it to ZIP so you, or the colleague you forward it to, can open it with a double-click.
You are moving files to a server
Repack a ZIP as TAR.GZ or TAR.XZ, the formats Linux tools and deployment scripts expect.
You have a disk image
Turn a DMG or IMG into an ISO that Windows, Linux and virtual machine apps can mount.
Passwords when you repack an archive
Contents settings and compression levels
- Compression: Store, Fast, Normal (default) or Maximum, for ZIP, 7z, RAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2 and TAR.XZ
- Folder layout: keep the original folders, or move every file to the top level
- Skip hidden system files: drops __MACOSX, .DS_Store, Thumbs.db and desktop.ini while repacking
- Keep file dates: preserves each file's original modified date instead of the conversion time
- Up to 20 archives per batch, each up to 95 MB
- Multi-part archives convert when every part is uploaded in the same batch
Archive conversion errors and fixes
The archive asks for a password you never set
The sender protected it. Ask them for the password and enter it in Current password; converters cannot bypass encryption.
Part of the files is missing from the result
The upload was one part of a split archive. Add every part, such as .part1.rar to .part4.rar or .7z.001 to .7z.003, to the same batch.
The ISO from a DMG will not mount
Some DMGs use Apple-only file systems such as APFS or HFS+, which Windows cannot read even as ISO. Choose Extract files to get the documents out instead.
A converted TAR.GZ loses executable permissions on a server
That happens when the source was a ZIP made on Windows, which stores no Unix permissions. Set them again after extracting, for example with chmod.
Archive converter questions
Do I lose anything when I convert one archive format to another?
The files themselves are unpacked and packed again without change. What can be lost is format-specific extras: a RAR recovery record, Unix permissions in a TAR when it becomes a ZIP, or comments stored in the archive. With Keep file dates on, modified dates carry over.
Can I convert a password-protected RAR or 7z?
Yes, if you know the password. Type it in Current password; without it the contents cannot be read by any converter. The new archive is unprotected unless you also fill in New password.
Why does my archive get bigger after conversion?
Formats compress differently. 7z and RAR can pack many files as one solid stream, while ZIP compresses each file separately, so text-heavy archives often grow a little when they become ZIP. Choosing Maximum in Compression narrows the gap.
Will a Mac app from a DMG work on Windows after I convert it to ISO?
No. Converting changes only the disk image format; a macOS application inside still runs only on a Mac. DMG to ISO is useful for documents, installers meant for other systems, and virtual machine tools that mount ISO but not DMG.
What is the difference between TAR, TAR.GZ, TAR.BZ2 and TAR.XZ?
TAR only joins files together without compressing them. The suffix names the compressor applied afterwards: gzip is fast and universal, bzip2 is a bit smaller and slower, and xz usually gives the smallest file of the three, which is why many Linux distributions ship their packages with it.
Can I open a CAB, LZH or ARJ file from an old disk or backup?
Yes. Upload it and choose ZIP or Extract files. CAB comes from Microsoft installers, while LZH and ARJ were popular in the DOS era, especially in Japan for LZH, and modern systems rarely open them without help.
Do I need to convert, or just extract?
If you only want the files on your device, choose Extract files or use unzip online. Convert when you need to pass the archive on, upload it somewhere that accepts only ZIP, or keep it in a different format.
Which format should I pick for long-term backups?
For backups you will open years from now, ZIP and TAR are the safest bets because their specifications are public and readers exist on every system. 7z is open too and gives smaller files. RAR's recovery record helps repair damaged copies, but reading RAR always depends on software that supports RARLAB's format.

- 7z to ZIP ConverterConvert 7z to ZIP online so the archive opens on Windows 10, Mac, iPhone and Android without 7-Zip. Folders and dates kept; encrypted 7z supported.
- DMG to ISO ConverterConvert an Apple DMG disk image to ISO so its files mount on Windows, Linux or in a virtual machine. What carries over, and why Mac apps stay Mac-only.
- Open RAR Files OnlineOpen a RAR file online without WinRAR or 7-Zip. Upload the archive, enter its password if it has one, and download the files inside. No account needed.
- RAR to ZIP ConverterConvert RAR to ZIP online so the archive opens on any computer or phone without WinRAR. Keeps folders and file dates; handles password-protected RAR files.
- TAR to ZIP ConverterConvert a .tar file to ZIP so it opens with a double-click on Windows, Mac and phones. Folders and file dates are kept, and the ZIP is usually smaller.
- TAR.GZ to ZIP ConverterConvert a .tar.gz or .tgz tarball to ZIP in one step: gzip is unpacked, the tar is read, and every file goes into a ZIP that opens on Windows and phones.
- ZIP to RAR ConverterConvert ZIP to RAR online when a forum, mod site or archive system asks for .rar. Maximum compression and an optional password; no WinRAR install.
