How to use this tool

How to open a RAR file without WinRAR

  1. Upload

    The .rar travels from your browser to our server, along with any extra parts.

    The archive is read, decrypted with your password if needed, and the folder tree rebuilt.

    You save the files you need; everything is deleted after 30 minutes.

RAR has been around since Eugene Roshal released it in 1993, and for most of that time operating systems could not open it on their own. Windows 11 added built-in RAR extraction in its 2023 update, but Windows 10, macOS's Archive Utility, iPhones and many locked-down office or school laptops still cannot. WinRAR itself is a paid program after its trial period.

A browser-based extractor fills that gap. It works on any device with a web browser, needs no admin rights, and leaves nothing installed afterwards. The trade-off is that the archive has to be uploaded, which is why there is a size limit and why files are removed on a fixed schedule. For ZIP, 7z and TAR archives, the same approach is available in unzip online.

RAR

RAR archive

RAR is a proprietary archive format created by Eugene Roshal in 1993 and used by WinRAR. It compresses better than classic ZIP and supports split volumes, recovery records and strong AES encryption. Creating RAR files requires WinRAR or another licensed tool, though many free programs can extract them. Some phones and operating systems cannot open RAR without an extra app.

People open RAR online when they need what is inside right now, on a device where they cannot or will not install an extractor; unlike RAR to ZIP, the goal is the files, not another archive.

RAR file won't open: common causes

  • Wrong or missing password

    Enter the exact password in Current password. RAR passwords are case-sensitive, and archives with encrypted names show no file list until it is right.

  • A volume of a split archive is missing

    Upload every part together. Files that cross into a missing part cannot be rebuilt by any extractor.

  • Unexpected end of archive

    The download stopped early. Download the RAR again and compare its size with the source.

  • Checksum error in some files

    The archive is damaged. If it was made with a recovery record, WinRAR's Repair command may fix it before you try again.

Open RAR online questions

Is it safe to open a RAR file online?

Extracting an archive only unpacks data; nothing inside is run, on our server or on your device. The real risk with any downloaded archive is opening an .exe, .bat or script it contains, so only run programs from senders you trust. Uploads are deleted after 30 minutes, as described in our privacy policy.

Can I open a RAR file on an iPhone or iPad without an app?

The Files app on iPhone and iPad unpacks ZIP archives but not RAR. Open this page in Safari, tap the upload area, choose the RAR from Files, and save the extracted photos or documents back to Files or Photos.

Does it open RAR5 archives as well as older RAR files?

RAR5 is the format WinRAR has written by default since version 5.0 in 2013, and older tools from before then cannot read it. Both the older RAR 4 layout and RAR5 archives are read here, including ones with AES-encrypted contents when you supply the password.

What if the RAR is larger than 95 MB?

The upload limit is 95 MB per file. If the archive was split into volumes, each part counts separately, so a 300 MB set made of 95 MB parts can be uploaded together. A single larger file needs a desktop tool such as 7-Zip.

Can I get a ZIP instead of loose files?

Yes. Switch Convert to to ZIP, or use RAR to ZIP, which keeps everything in one archive that any device opens later.
