WOFF to TTF Converter

WOFF files turn up in old website backups, theme folders and the webfont kits foundries sold in the 2010s. This converter inflates each zlib-compressed table and writes a TrueType font you can install, edit or reuse.

What is inside a WOFF file

sfntspline font · SFNT container
The table-based structure shared by TrueType and OpenType fonts: a directory followed by tables such as glyf or CFF (outlines), hmtx (widths), name (names) and GPOS (kerning). A WOFF file is an sfnt with each table compressed and a short header in front.

Because WOFF compresses table by table, converting back is a matter of inflating each one, recomputing the table directory and checksums, and writing the result as a .ttf. Tables that the font tool left uncompressed, which WOFF allows when zlib would not make them smaller, are copied as they are. That is also why a WOFF is only moderately smaller than its TTF: zlib, the same compression used in ZIP and PNG, works well on outlines but has less to gain on short tables.

Old webfont kits are the usual source. Services such as the Font Squirrel Webfont Generator produced a folder per font with .woff, .ttf, .eot and .svg copies and a sample stylesheet. If the .ttf from that kit is gone, the .woff is the most complete replacement. Make sure the license from the original purchase covers desktop installation; many webfont licenses do not.

Fixing a WOFF to TTF font that will not install

  • Windows reports that the file is not a valid font.

You are opening the .woff, not the converted .ttf. Install the downloaded TTF; the operating system never accepts WOFF directly.

  • The font installs but replaces an existing one.

The two share a family name. Convert again with a new Family name such as "Brand Sans Web" so both stay in the font menu.

  • Accented letters or symbols show as boxes.

The WOFF was a subset made for one language. The missing glyphs were never in the file; download the full font from its source.

WOFF

Web Open Font Format

WOFF is a web font format created by Mozilla, Opera and Microsoft and published as a W3C Recommendation in 2012. It wraps TrueType or OpenType font data with compression and metadata for faster downloads. All browsers support WOFF, but it has been largely superseded by WOFF2, which compresses better. Desktop operating systems cannot install WOFF fonts directly.

TTF

TrueType font

TTF is the TrueType font format developed by Apple in the late 1980s and released in 1991, then licensed to Microsoft. It defines glyph outlines with quadratic curves and includes hinting instructions that make text look sharp on screens. TrueType is supported by every desktop operating system, word processor and design app. It lacks some advanced typographic features of OpenType and is larger than web font formats.

WOFF to TTF recovers an installable desktop font from the zlib-compressed web format of the 2010s, typically when the web kit is the only copy of a font that someone still holds a license for.

WOFF to TTF FAQ

What is the difference between WOFF and WOFF2 when converting to TTF?

Only the compression you are undoing. WOFF 1.0 compresses each table separately with zlib; WOFF2 uses Brotli and transforms the glyph data first. Both unpack to an ordinary TTF, so pick WOFF2 to TTF for .woff2 files and this page for .woff.

Why did my icon font convert to TTF with no visible letters?

Icon fonts such as older Font Awesome releases place their symbols in the Unicode Private Use Area, not on letter keys. The TTF is fine; type the icon's code point, or pick the glyph from Character Map on Windows or the Character Viewer on a Mac.

Do I lose anything converting WOFF to TTF?

Only the WOFF-specific extras. A WOFF can carry an XML metadata block and a private data block that sit outside the font tables, and a TTF has no place for them. Outlines, metrics, kerning, features and the name table come through unchanged.

Can I convert the EOT and SVG files from the same webfont kit?

Yes, the font converter reads EOT and SVG fonts as well. The WOFF is usually the best source, though: EOT files can be compressed with a proprietary scheme, and SVG fonts lack kerning and OpenType features.

Will the converted TTF have hinting?

It keeps whatever the WOFF contained. Webfont generators often stripped or replaced hints to save space, so if small text renders poorly on Windows, run the conversion again with Hinting set to Auto-hint.
