TTF to WOFF2 Converter
Self-hosting a font starts here: WOFF2 is the format every current browser downloads first, and it is the smallest wrapper for the TrueType data you already have. This page also writes the CSS rule that loads it.

Removing scripts you don't use can shrink a web font from hundreds of KB to under 30 KB. Keep all characters for fonts you install on a computer.
Paste the text or characters the font must cover, e.g. a logo word or a headline. Everything else is removed.
Hints sharpen small text on Windows screens. Removing them often saves 10–30% on web fonts; auto-hint adds them to fonts that have none.
Leave empty to keep the original. Renaming lets you install the converted font next to the original without a conflict.
E.g. Regular, Bold, Italic. Leave empty to keep the original style name.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the TTF files
Add every weight and style you plan to use, up to 20 files of up to 95 MB each. Variable TTFs work too and keep their axes.
- 2
Keep CSS on, subset if you can
Include @font-face CSS is already ticked. Under Advanced settings, set Keep characters to Basic Latin or Latin + accents if your site is in a Western language, and consider Hinting set to Remove.

Why WOFF2 is the web font format to ship
A TTF is uncompressed table data: outlines, metrics, kerning, names. WOFF2, published as a W3C Recommendation in 2018, keeps exactly those tables but runs them through Brotli, the compression algorithm Google released in 2015, after first reorganizing the glyph outlines so they compress better. Google's own tests found WOFF2 roughly 30% smaller than the older WOFF format on average, and the browser restores the original font data after download, so nothing about the letter shapes changes.
Fonts block rendering, which makes their size matter more than the kilobytes suggest. Until a web font arrives, the browser either hides the text or shows a fallback, and a late swap can shift the layout. Smaller files narrow that window, and two options here narrow it further: Keep characters removes glyphs your pages never show, and Hinting set to Remove drops instructions that phones and high-density screens ignore anyway. Keep the TTF masters for desktop use; WOFF2 to TTF can unpack a web font later, but it cannot restore glyphs a subset removed.

TTF
TrueType font
TTF is the TrueType font format developed by Apple in the late 1980s and released in 1991, then licensed to Microsoft. It defines glyph outlines with quadratic curves and includes hinting instructions that make text look sharp on screens. TrueType is supported by every desktop operating system, word processor and design app. It lacks some advanced typographic features of OpenType and is larger than web font formats.

WOFF2
Web Open Font Format 2
WOFF2 is the second version of the Web Open Font Format, based on Google's Brotli compression and published as a W3C Recommendation in 2018. Files are about 30% smaller than WOFF, which helps pages load faster. Every modern browser supports WOFF2, and it is the recommended format for web fonts. Desktop operating systems and design apps cannot install it directly.

TTF to WOFF2 packs a desktop font into the Brotli-compressed container browsers prefer, so the same glyphs reach visitors in fewer bytes; the reverse page exists for people who need to install a font they found on the web.
TTF to WOFF2 FAQ
Do I still need a TTF or WOFF fallback next to WOFF2?
For public websites today, usually not. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have read WOFF2 for years, and the few browsers that do not, such as Internet Explorer 11, are rarely worth an extra file. Add TTF to WOFF output as a second src entry only if your analytics show such visitors.
Why is my WOFF2 font still over 100 KB?
Compression only shrinks how the glyphs are stored, not how many there are. A font that covers Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese ships all of them. Subsetting to the scripts you actually display is what brings a text font down to the tens of kilobytes.
What does font-display: swap do?
It tells the browser to show text in a fallback font immediately and swap in your web font once it arrives, instead of hiding the text while it downloads. Add it to your @font-face rule as in the example above, or use optional if you would rather skip a late swap on slow connections.
Can I convert a Google Fonts TTF to WOFF2 and host it myself?
Yes. Google Fonts families are released under the SIL Open Font License or Apache License, both of which allow conversion and self-hosting. Hosting the file yourself also avoids a request to a third-party server.
Does WOFF2 work in email newsletters?
Only in some clients. Apple Mail and iOS Mail load web fonts through @font-face, while Gmail and most Outlook versions ignore them and show your fallback font. Always list a safe system font in the font stack of an email.
