Common values

1 ft² = 0.092903 m² · multiply by 0.09290304

Where 0.0929 comes from

A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square that is one foot on each side covers 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 m². That figure is exact, not a measurement. Going the other way, one square meter holds 10.7639 square feet, which is why many people simply divide by 10.764 instead of multiplying by a long decimal.

Remember that areas scale with the square of length. A room of 12 × 15 ft is 180 sq ft, or 16.72 m². Converting each side first (3.66 × 4.57 m) and then multiplying gives the same answer, but converting the area directly avoids two rounding steps.

Square feet in US and Indian real estate

Homes in the United States, Canada, the UK listings market and India are usually advertised in square feet. A 1,500 sq ft house is about 139 m², a 2,000 sq ft house is about 186 m², and a 650 sq ft city apartment is roughly 60 m². If you are comparing a listing abroad that quotes square meters, convert the US number rather than guessing; the gap is nearly elevenfold.

India adds a twist: the same flat can be quoted as carpet area, built-up area or super built-up area. Carpet area is the usable floor inside the walls; built-up adds wall thickness and balconies; super built-up adds a share of lobbies and stairs, often 25–35% more than carpet. Since the RERA Act of 2016, developers must state carpet area, so make sure both figures you compare use the same definition before converting.

Quick estimate and common slips

Divide by 10 and then subtract about 7%: 800 sq ft ÷ 10 = 80, minus 5.6 gives 74.4 m², against the exact 74.3 m². Dividing by 10 alone is a useful first check but overstates the area by about 7.6%.

The classic error is using the length factor 0.3048 on an area, which turns 1,000 sq ft into 304.8 instead of 92.9. Going in the opposite direction, from metric listings to feet, is covered on the square meters to square feet page, and land-sized figures belong on acres to square feet.

Frequently asked questions

How many square meters is 1,000 square feet?
1,000 sq ft is 92.90 m². A 1,000 sq ft apartment is a little under 93 square meters.
What is a 10 by 12 foot room in square meters?
10 × 12 ft is 120 sq ft, which is 11.15 m². Measured side by side it is about 3.05 × 3.66 m.
Is carpet area or super built-up area used for the conversion?
The conversion factor is the same for both; what changes is the number you start with. Convert the figure that matches what you are comparing, usually carpet area for usable space.
Why do I divide by 10.764 and not by 3.28?
3.28 is the number of feet in a meter, a length factor. For areas you square it: 3.2808 × 3.2808 ≈ 10.764 square feet in each square meter.
