OXPS to PDF

An .oxps file is what Windows 8 and later save when you print to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. Older Windows versions, Macs and phones cannot show it, but as a PDF the same pages open everywhere with their text intact.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Select the .oxps files

Add files from your Documents folder or an email attachment. Mix .oxps and older .xps files freely, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB per file.

  2. 2

    Keep the original pages

Paper size and orientation come from the printer settings stored in the file. Change Page size or Orientation under Advanced settings only to force a format.

  3. 3

    Press Convert to PDF

Download the PDFs singly or zipped together. Both the OXPS uploads and the PDFs are removed after 30 minutes.

Upload the .oxps file and press Convert to PDF. The pages keep their size, fonts and selectable text, because OpenXPS and PDF are both fixed-layout formats and nothing is redrawn as a picture.

What an OXPS file is and how it ends up on your PC

Microsoft launched the XML Paper Specification with Windows Vista in 2006 as its own answer to PDF. It then handed the format to Ecma International, which published it as OpenXPS, ECMA-388, in 2009. Starting with Windows 8, the built-in Microsoft XPS Document Writer saves in this newer flavor with the .oxps extension; the older .xps type is covered on XPS to PDF.

Most OXPS files are accidents of the print dialog. The XPS Document Writer sits in the printer list next to Microsoft Print to PDF, which Windows 10 added in 2015, and the two are easy to confuse. Choose the wrong one when saving a bank statement, a boarding pass or an online order, and you get an .oxps that the airline kiosk, your accountant or your phone will not open.

Inside, an OXPS file is a ZIP package. Rename a copy to .zip and you will see a Documents folder with one .fpage XML file per page, plus the fonts and images the page uses. Because every page is already laid out, the conversion to PDF is a translation of drawing instructions, not a reflow, so line breaks and page counts never change.

OXPS

OpenXPS document

OXPS is the standardised version of XPS published by Ecma International as ECMA-388 in 2009. Windows 8 and later produce OXPS files when printing to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer. It preserves page layout like PDF, but it is not compatible with older XPS viewers and is barely supported on macOS, Linux, phones or the web. Most people convert OXPS to PDF to make it usable.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

OpenXPS files come only from the Windows print-to-file printer and even Windows 7 cannot read them; a PDF makes those printed pages readable on every device.

OXPS to PDF questions

What is the difference between .oxps and .xps?

Both describe fixed pages in XML inside a ZIP package. .oxps follows OpenXPS, the version standardized by Ecma International as ECMA-388 in 2009, and uses different internal names, so programs written only for the original XPS refuse it. The content, text and fonts are equivalent.

Why does Windows 7 say it cannot open my OXPS file?

The XPS Viewer that came with Windows 7 understands only the original XPS format. Files printed on Windows 8, 10 or 11 are OpenXPS by default, so the older viewer rejects them. A PDF opens in any browser on Windows 7.

Can I convert OXPS on a Mac or an iPhone?

Yes. Upload the file in Safari or any browser; there is nothing to install. macOS Preview and the iPhone Files app cannot preview OXPS, but they show the converted PDF right away.

Is OXPS a security risk?

An OXPS file holds page descriptions, fonts and images, not scripts or macros. The usual risk is a fake attachment with an .oxps name that is really something else. Open files only from senders you expect, and converting them here means nothing runs on your computer.

I printed several web receipts as OXPS. Can they become one PDF?
