Meters per Second to Kilometers per Hour
One meter per second is exactly three point six kilometers per hour, so you multiply m/s by 3.6 to get km/h: 10 m/s is 36 km/h and 25 m/s is 90 km/h. Type a speed below to convert it as you type.
1 meter per second = 3.6 kilometers per hour
1 m/s = 3.6 km/h · multiply by 3.6
Why the factor is exactly 3.6
An hour has 3,600 seconds and a kilometer has 1,000 meters. Moving one meter every second means covering 3,600 meters in an hour, which is 3.6 km. Both pieces are exact definitions, so 3.6 carries no rounding at all, and the reverse factor is just as clean: divide km/h by 3.6, or multiply by 0.2778, to get back to m/s.
Physics textbooks, engineering specs and sports science work in m/s because it is the SI unit of speed and slots straight into formulas such as kinetic energy or distance = speed × time. Road signs, car speedometers and weather apps in most countries use km/h because people think about trips in hours, not seconds. This page is the bridge between the two.
How to convert meters per second to kilometers per hour
km/h = m/s × 3.6
1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
25 m/s × 3.6 = 90 km/h
- Start with the value in meters per second.
- Multiply it by 3.6.
- Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.
Real speeds in both units
A relaxed walk is about 1.4 m/s, or 5 km/h. Usain Bolt's 9.58-second 100 m world record averages 10.44 m/s, which is 37.6 km/h, and his fastest stretch reached roughly 12.4 m/s, close to 45 km/h. A city speed limit of 50 km/h is 13.9 m/s, and highway traffic at 100 km/h covers 27.8 meters every second, so a 1.5-second reaction delay already eats up more than 40 meters before the brakes engage.
Wind is where many people meet m/s first. Forecasts in Scandinavia, Russia, China and much of Eastern Europe give wind in meters per second, while others use km/h, mph or knots. On the Beaufort scale a strong breeze starts at 10.8 m/s (about 39 km/h) and hurricane force begins at 32.7 m/s, which is roughly 118 km/h. For sailing forecasts in knots, see knots to km/h; for every other speed pair, the unit converter lists them all.

A shortcut you can do in your head
Multiply by 4 and then take away a tenth of the result: 15 m/s × 4 = 60, minus 6 gives 54 km/h, which is exact, because 4 × 0.9 = 3.6. The trick works for every number, so it is not an estimate at all, just an easier order of operations.
The usual mistake is dividing instead of multiplying. Since a kilometer per hour is a much slower speed than a meter per second, the km/h figure must always be the bigger number. If 20 m/s turns into 5.6, you went the wrong way; the right answer is 72 km/h.
Frequently asked questions
- How many km/h is 1 m/s?
- Exactly 3.6 km/h. One meter per second adds up to 3,600 meters, or 3.6 kilometers, in an hour.
- What is the speed of sound in km/h?
- In dry air at 20 °C sound travels at about 343 m/s, which is roughly 1,235 km/h. It is slower in cold air and faster in warm air.
- Is a wind of 15 m/s dangerous?
- 15 m/s is 54 km/h, a near gale on the Beaufort scale. Walking against it is hard, whole trees sway, and small boats should stay in harbor.
- How do I turn km/h back into meters per second?
- Divide by 3.6. For example, 90 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 25 m/s, and 120 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 33.3 m/s.
