Inches to Feet
There are 12 inches in a foot, so divide inches by 12 to get feet: 36 in is 3 ft and 70 in is 5.83 ft, which is 5 ft 10 in once the remainder is kept as inches.

Why a foot has twelve inches
The inch comes from the Latin uncia, meaning a twelfth part, which is also where the word ounce comes from. Roman measures divided the foot into twelve unciae, and English units kept the pattern. Twelve is convenient for builders and traders because it divides evenly by 2, 3, 4 and 6, so a third or a quarter of a foot is a whole number of inches, something a base-ten unit cannot offer.
The modern lengths were fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: the inch is exactly 2.54 cm and the foot exactly 30.48 cm, so the ratio of 12 is exact in metric terms too.
Where inches pile up into feet
Lumber yards and hardware stores list lengths in inches on spec sheets but sell boards in feet: a 96-inch stud is an 8-foot board, and 120 in is 10 ft. Ceiling heights, rug sizes and fence panels show the same mix, with a 72-inch panel being 6 ft wide.
Snowfall is measured in inches in the US, and big totals are easier to picture in feet. Lake-effect storms near Buffalo, New York, can drop 60 inches in a few days, which is 5 ft of snow. Measurements of a child at the doctor's office, often recorded in total inches, become feet the same way: 48 in is exactly 4 ft.
Decimals versus feet and inches
Dividing gives decimal feet, which is fine for calculations but not how people say lengths. To get feet and inches, take the whole number of feet and multiply the decimal part by 12, or simply find the remainder when dividing by 12. 70 in ÷ 12 is 5 with 10 left over, so 5 ft 10 in. Writing 5.83 ft as 5 ft 8 in is a common slip that loses two inches.
For the reverse direction use feet to inches; to get from inches to metric, the unit converter has centimeters and meters.
Frequently asked questions
- How many feet is 60 inches?
- 60 in is exactly 5 ft, since 60 ÷ 12 = 5 with no remainder.
- What is 65 inches in feet and inches?
