glTF to GLB Converter

A glTF export is usually three kinds of file: a .gltf JSON, one or more .bin buffers and a folder of textures. GLB is the same model packed into one binary file, which is what upload forms, viewers and AR apps want.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Zip the glTF folder

Put the .gltf, its .bin files and texture images in one ZIP, keeping the folder layout the export created, and upload it. A self-contained .gltf with embedded data can be uploaded on its own. Up to 20 files, 95 MB each.

  2. 2

Leave the model as it is

Model units stays at m and Up axis on Keep, because a valid glTF is already in meters and Y-up. Keep textures & materials is on so every image is embedded.

  3. 3

    Convert to GLB

Press Convert to GLB and download one file per model. Uploads and results are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

What is the difference between glTF and GLB?

They store the same glTF 2.0 model. A .gltf is readable JSON that points to separate .bin and image files; a GLB packs that JSON, the buffers and the images into one binary file.

Why bundle a glTF into a GLB

The Khronos Group designed glTF 2.0, released in 2017, as a transmission format: the last step between a 3D tool and whoever displays the model. The JSON form is friendly to developers because you can read and edit it, but in practice it is fragile. Rename a texture, upload the .gltf without its .bin, or let a CMS strip the folder structure, and the model loads with missing geometry or white surfaces.

GLB fixes that by putting everything in one container. Shopify product media, Android's Scene Viewer, Google's model-viewer and most asset marketplaces ask for GLB for this reason. Conversion is lossless: the converter reads the JSON, loads every buffer and image it references, writes them into one binary chunk and rewrites the references to point inside the file.

GL Transmission Format

glTF is an open 3D format from the Khronos Group, first released in 2015, often described as "the JPEG of 3D". A .gltf file is JSON describing the scene, usually accompanied by separate .bin geometry and texture image files. It supports PBR materials, animation and skinning and is designed for efficient real-time rendering. The separate files can be lost when sharing, which is why the single-file GLB form is often preferred.

glTF Binary (GLB)

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, the 3D transmission format published by the Khronos Group in 2017. It packs geometry, PBR materials, textures and animations into a single compact file designed for fast loading. GLB is widely used for web 3D, AR viewers, Android Scene Viewer and online model marketplaces. Some older desktop 3D tools and CAD programs do not import it.

glTF to GLB is a packaging step: people bundle a .gltf, its .bin buffers and textures into one file because upload forms, Android AR and web viewers want a single self-contained model.

Fixing missing .bin and texture errors

  • The GLB has no geometry or the conversion fails

The .bin buffer was not uploaded. Zip it together with the .gltf, keeping the same file name the JSON refers to.

  • Surfaces are white or gray

Textures are missing. Open the .gltf in a text editor, check the image uri entries and include those files at the same relative paths in the ZIP.

  • A texture path starts with C:\ or /Users

The exporter wrote an absolute path. Re-export with relative paths, or move the image next to the .gltf and edit its uri to the bare file name.

  • Textures are KTX2 or WebP

Those need the KHR_texture_basisu or EXT_texture_webp extensions, which some viewers do not support. Re-export with PNG or JPEG for the widest support.

glTF to GLB questions

Does converting glTF to GLB change the model?

No. Meshes, materials, node names, animations and skins are copied as they are; only the packaging changes. The JSON moves into the GLB's first chunk and the buffers and images into its binary chunk.

Why should I upload a ZIP and not just the .gltf?

A separate-files glTF only points to its .bin and textures by relative path. Uploaded alone, those links lead nowhere and the GLB would lack geometry or images. Zipping the folder keeps every referenced file next to the .gltf, which our guide on unzipping files on any device also covers in reverse.

Will the GLB be smaller than my glTF?

Compared with a .gltf that embeds everything as base64 text, yes, by roughly a quarter, because base64 inflates binary data by about a third. Compared with a .gltf plus .bin and images, the total stays about the same; the gain is having one file.

Are Draco-compressed glTF files supported?

A glTF using the KHR_draco_mesh_compression extension is read and its geometry kept. If you need the smallest possible web file, apply Draco or meshopt compression to the finished GLB with a tool such as glTF-Transform.

Can I go from GLB back to separate glTF files?

Yes. Upload the GLB and choose glTF under Convert to on the 3D model converter. That is useful when you want to edit the JSON by hand or swap a texture without re-exporting.

Which apps export glTF that I can pack this way?

Blender's glTF exporter can write either glTF Separate or GLB directly, as can Sketchfab downloads, Substance tools and most game engine exporters. If your tool only offered the separate form, this page gives you the single file.
