GLB to USDZ Converter

Android and the web read GLB; Apple's AR Quick Look reads USDZ. Convert your GLB once and the same model opens in AR on iPhone and iPad, with its textures and real-world scale.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the GLB

Select up to 20 .glb files of up to 95 MB each. A .gltf with its files can be zipped and uploaded instead.

  2. 2

    Keep textures on

Keep textures & materials is on and Model units stays at m, because both GLB and USDZ for AR expect meters. Leave Up axis on Keep unless the model lies on its side in the preview.

  3. 3

    Convert to USDZ

Press Convert to USDZ, then send the file to an iPhone and tap it to open in AR Quick Look. Files are deleted from our server after 30 minutes.

What USDZ is and how it differs from GLB

USD, Universal Scene Description, is the scene format Pixar built for its film pipeline and open-sourced in 2016. At WWDC 2018 Apple and Pixar introduced USDZ, a single-file package of a USD scene and its textures, and Apple made it the format of AR Quick Look in iOS 12. Technically it is a ZIP archive stored without compression and with its files aligned to 64-byte boundaries, so the phone can read the geometry and images in place without unpacking.

GLB plays the same role in the Khronos world: one binary file with the scene, buffers and textures, using metallic-roughness materials. The two are close enough that conversion is mostly translation. Meshes, node hierarchy, UVs, base color, metallic, roughness, normal, occlusion and emissive maps move over directly, and the scale stays in meters.

GLB

glTF Binary (GLB)

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, the 3D transmission format published by the Khronos Group in 2017. It packs geometry, PBR materials, textures and animations into a single compact file designed for fast loading. GLB is widely used for web 3D, AR viewers, Android Scene Viewer and online model marketplaces. Some older desktop 3D tools and CAD programs do not import it.

USDZ

Universal Scene Description (USDZ)

USDZ is a zipped package of Pixar's Universal Scene Description format, introduced with Apple in 2018 for augmented reality. It stores geometry, PBR materials, textures and animation in a single uncompressed archive designed for fast loading. iPhone and iPad display USDZ models in AR Quick Look, and Apple Vision Pro uses it widely. Support on Android and in many other 3D tools is limited.

GLB to USDZ exists for one audience: anyone who needs a model to open in AR on an iPhone or iPad, since Apple's AR Quick Look reads USDZ and not glTF.

What carries over from GLB to USDZ

Converts cleanly

  • Meshes, UVs and the node hierarchy
  • Base color, metallic and roughness textures
  • Normal, occlusion and emissive maps
  • Alpha blending and alpha cutouts
  • Real-world scale in meters

Check after converting

  • glTF extensions such as clearcoat, sheen and transmission
  • Vertex colors, which Quick Look often ignores
  • Texture transforms and tiled UV offsets
  • Morph targets and several animation clips
  • Very large textures that slow loading

If your model starts as a glTF with loose .bin and image files, pack it with glTF to GLB first, or zip the folder and upload it here. For product pages, the usual pattern is model-viewer with the GLB as the main file and this USDZ as the iOS file, so every visitor gets AR on their own device.

GLB to USDZ questions

How do I test the USDZ on my iPhone?

AirDrop it to the phone, or save it to iCloud Drive and tap it in the Files app. Quick Look opens the model with two tabs, Object and AR; the AR tab places it on a surface at real size.

Why does the USDZ look shinier or flatter than the GLB?

Apple's preview material supports base color, metallic, roughness, normal, occlusion, emissive and opacity, which covers core glTF materials. Extensions such as clearcoat, sheen or transmission have no equivalent and are left out, so glass and fabric can look different. Check those materials in Quick Look before you publish.

Do animations survive the GLB to USDZ conversion?

Simple transform animations, such as a spinning or moving part, can be carried across. Morph target animations and multiple named clips are less dependable, since AR Quick Look plays one timeline. Test the result if motion matters.

How large can a USDZ be for AR on the web?

There is no single hard limit in Safari, but the whole file downloads before the AR view opens, so every megabyte is waiting time on mobile data. Resize textures to 2048 px or less before converting, using the ideas in how to reduce image size in KB.

Is a Mac with Reality Converter a better option?

Apple's free Reality Converter for macOS converts glTF to USDZ and lets you adjust materials with a live preview, which is useful for fine tuning. This converter needs no Mac and handles up to 20 files in one go, which suits product catalogs and Windows users.

Can the USDZ be turned back into GLB later?

Keep the original GLB instead. Converting back and forth repeats the material translation each time; the GLB stays your master for the web and Android, and the USDZ is the Apple copy.
