GLB to FBX Converter

GLB is how models travel on the web; FBX is what many game and animation pipelines import. Convert a .glb here to get a binary FBX with its textures embedded, ready for Unity, Unreal Engine or Maya.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the .glb

Add one GLB or up to 20, 95 MB each. A .gltf with separate .bin and texture files is easiest to handle after packing it into a single GLB.

  2. 2

    Keep binary FBX and textures

Convert to is FBX, File encoding Binary and Keep textures & materials on, so images are packed into the FBX. Leave Up axis on Keep unless the model arrives lying on its back.

  3. 3

    Convert and import

Press Convert to FBX and drag the file into your engine's asset folder or Blender's File › Import › FBX.

GLB versus FBX: an open web format and Autodesk's exchange format

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, which the Khronos Group released in 2017 and which became the international standard ISO/IEC 12113 in 2022. One .glb holds a 12-byte header, a JSON description of the scene and a binary chunk with geometry and images. It is built to be loaded quickly by a renderer: units are meters, Y points up, and materials follow a physically based metallic-roughness model that three.js, Babylon.js and Android's Scene Viewer render alike.

FBX began as the file format of Kaydara's FiLMBOX motion-capture software and has belonged to Autodesk since 2006. It is proprietary and documented mainly through Autodesk's FBX SDK, yet it remains the default interchange format for game engines and animation tools. Unity's model importer reads FBX natively, Unreal Engine's import options are built around it, and Maya and 3ds Max use it to move rigged characters between studios.

Importing the FBX into Unity, Unreal Engine or Blender

Unity

  1. 01Drag the .fbx into the Assets folder of the Project window.
  2. 02On the Rig tab choose Humanoid or Generic for characters.
  3. 03On the Materials tab use Extract Textures to edit maps.

Unreal Engine

  1. 01Click Import in the Content Browser and pick the .fbx.
  2. 02Tick Import Animations for rigged models.
  3. 03Check Import Uniform Scale if the size is off by 100.

Blender

  1. 01Use File › Import › FBX (.fbx).
  2. 02Open the Shading workspace to check materials.
  3. 03Use Automatic Bone Orientation if bones point the wrong way.

Most surprises after a GLB to FBX conversion come from materials, not geometry. glTF often packs ambient occlusion, roughness and metallic into the red, green and blue channels of one image. FBX's classic material model has no slot for that packed texture, so engines import it as an extra image you connect by hand. Textures stored as WebP inside a GLB are another catch: few FBX importers read WebP, so they should be in PNG or JPEG; WebP to JPG: when and why explains the trade-off.

If the destination is a static mesh for a renderer or a 3D printer rather than an engine, FBX may be the wrong target; FBX to OBJ shows what a plain mesh format keeps. For Apple's AR Quick Look on iPhone, go from the same GLB to GLB to USDZ instead.

GLB

glTF Binary (GLB)

GLB is the binary form of glTF 2.0, the 3D transmission format published by the Khronos Group in 2017. It packs geometry, PBR materials, textures and animations into a single compact file designed for fast loading. GLB is widely used for web 3D, AR viewers, Android Scene Viewer and online model marketplaces. Some older desktop 3D tools and CAD programs do not import it.

FBX

Filmbox (FBX)

FBX is a 3D format created by Kaydara for its Filmbox software and owned by Autodesk since 2006. It stores meshes, materials, textures, skeletons, skinning, cameras, lights and animation in one file. It is the standard interchange format for game assets in Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya, 3ds Max and Blender. The format is proprietary, and behaviour can differ between exporters and SDK versions.

GLB to FBX questions

Will the animations in my GLB still play after converting to FBX?

Skeletal animation and blend-shape (morph target) animation exist in both formats, so clips stored in the GLB have a place in the FBX. Check each clip in the engine's animation preview after import, especially if the GLB held several, since some importers split or rename them.

Why do my materials look gray or plastic in Unity after converting?

glTF materials use metallic and roughness values, often packed into one texture, while FBX materials were designed around diffuse and specular. Base color and normal maps usually come through; metallic and roughness may need to be reconnected in the engine's material editor.

Do I need to convert GLB to FBX for Blender?

Not for opening it. Blender has shipped a glTF 2.0 importer since version 2.80, so File › Import › glTF 2.0 reads a GLB directly. Convert only when the next tool in your pipeline expects FBX.

Should I choose binary or ASCII FBX?

Binary. It is smaller, loads faster and is what Unity, Unreal and Maya expect. Blender's FBX importer does not read ASCII FBX at all. Pick ASCII only for a script or diff tool that needs to read the file as text.

Why is the FBX model 100 times too big or too small in Unreal?

glTF works in meters, Unreal in centimeters, and FBX carries a unit scale that each importer interprets. If the size is off by 100, adjust the import uniform scale or set Model units before converting, then check a known dimension.
