Atmospheres to Bar
One standard atmosphere is exactly 1.01325 bar, so multiply atm by 1.01325 to get bar: 2 atm is 2.0265 bar and 10 atm is 10.1325 bar. The two units differ by only about 1.3%.
1 atmosphere = 1.01325 bars
1 atm = 1.01325 bar · multiply by 1.01325
Two definitions, almost the same size
The standard atmosphere was fixed in 1954 by the General Conference on Weights and Measures as exactly 101,325 pascals, the average air pressure at sea level. That equals 101.325 kPa, 14.696 psi and 760 mmHg. The bar is a rounder metric unit, exactly 100,000 Pa, introduced so pressure could be stated in clean powers of ten.
In 1982 IUPAC changed standard pressure for chemistry from 1 atm to 1 bar, so older textbooks and newer ones quote slightly different standard conditions. Gas volumes and equilibrium constants at standard pressure shift by about 1.3% between the two, which matters in precise lab work and almost nowhere else.
How to convert atmospheres to bars
bar = atm × 1.01325
1 atm = 1.01325 bar
25 atm × 1.01325 = 25.3313 bar
- Start with the value in atmospheres.
- Multiply it by 1.01325.
- Round the result to the precision the job needs: whole numbers for everyday use, more decimals for engineering or recipes.
Depth and altitude
Under water, every 10 meters of seawater adds about 1 bar, or 0.99 atm. At 30 m a diver breathes air at roughly 4 bar absolute, the surface atmosphere plus three bars of water, which is why air is used up four times faster there than at the surface.
Going up, pressure falls. Airliner cabins are pressurized to the equivalent of 6,000–8,000 ft, roughly 0.75–0.8 atm, and the summit of Mount Everest sits near 0.33 atm. Climbers and pilots usually see these figures in hPa or inches of mercury; converting to bar or atm makes them easier to compare.

Where you will see atm
Watches use atm and bar loosely: a watch rated 10 ATM or 10 bar is tested to about 100 m of static water pressure, which does not mean it is safe for diving to that depth. For tire and compressor figures, bar to psi and kPa to psi are more practical.
Frequently asked questions
- How many bar is 1 atm?
- Exactly 1.01325 bar. One bar is 0.986923 atm.
- Is 1 bar equal to atmospheric pressure?
- Close but not exactly. Standard sea-level pressure is 1.01325 bar, and actual weather pressure ranges from about 0.95 to 1.05 bar.
- What is the absolute pressure at 20 meters underwater?
- About 3 bar, or 2.96 atm: one bar from the atmosphere and roughly two from the seawater above.
- Does a 10 ATM watch work for scuba diving?
- Usually not. A 10 ATM rating suits swimming and snorkeling; dive watches are tested under the ISO 6425 diving standard, and most are rated to 200 m (20 bar) or deeper.
