Compress Video to 10 MB

This page is set to land your video at or just under 10 MB as an MP4 capped at 720p, which is what Discord's free tier and nearly every email system will take.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the video

Upload up to 20 clips of up to 95 MB each: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and most phone and camera formats.

  2. 2

    Check the target

Target size reads 10 MB and Maximum resolution 720p. For clips longer than about 90 seconds, lower Maximum resolution to 480p.

  3. 3

    Compress and send

Press Compress to MP4. Two-pass encoding measures the clip first, then encodes it to fit the target.

Answer

Can any video be compressed to 10 MB?

Any video can, but not every video will look good. 10 MB is about 80 megabits for the whole clip, so length decides quality: 30 seconds look sharp at 720p, a minute looks fine, two minutes need 480p, and five minutes only work for talking heads.

10 MB video bitrate math at 720p and 480p

File size equals bitrate times duration. Divide 80 megabits by the clip's length in seconds to get the total bitrate, subtract the audio, and the rest feeds the picture. H.264 at 720p looks clean from around 1.5 Mbps and acceptable near 1 Mbps; 480p holds up around 0.5 to 0.8 Mbps. These are rough guides: a static screen recording needs far less than shaky footage of a football match.

What fits in 10 MB (about 80 megabits)
LengthTotal bitrateLeft for videoResolution that holds up
30 s2.67 Mbps2.54 Mbps with 128 kbps audio720p, or 1080p for calm footage
60 s1.33 Mbps1.21 Mbps with 128 kbps audio720p
120 s0.67 Mbps0.57 Mbps with 96 kbps audio480p
300 s0.27 Mbps0.20 Mbps with 64 kbps audio360p, speech only

Compress a 1 GB video to 10 MB: what is realistic

A 1 GB recording needs trimming first

Each upload here can be up to 95 MB. A 1 GB phone video is usually several minutes of 4K: Apple lists about 170 MB per minute for 4K at 30 fps in High Efficiency, so 1 GB is roughly six minutes. Squeezed into 10 MB, that is about 0.2 Mbps, where any motion turns to blocks. Trim it to the moment that matters in your phone's Photos or Gallery app first.

Cutting length is the strongest compression there is. Halving the duration doubles the bits for every second that remains, so a 20-second highlight from a six-minute recording can still look crisp at 720p in 10 MB. If a long clip is already under 95 MB, trim video cuts it here before you compress.

Discord lowered its free upload limit from 25 MB to 10 MB in 2024, which is why 10 MB became the number to hit; Nitro and server boosts raise it. Email is subtler. Gmail allows 25 MB and Outlook.com 20 MB of attachments, but attachments travel Base64-encoded, which adds about a third, and on-premises Exchange servers ship with a 10 MB default message limit. For a work address, a 7 MB target is safer. Our guide to compressing video for Discord and email has worked examples, and chat apps with their own rules are covered in compress video for WhatsApp.

Compress video to 10 MB questions

Why does Discord still reject my 10 MB video?

Windows counts a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes and macOS as 1,000,000, so the same file shows different sizes depending on where you look. The tool aims just under the target; if a file sits right at the edge, set Target size to 9.5 and compress again.

Does compressing to 10 MB lower the frame rate?

Not unless you ask. Maximum frame rate stays on Same as source. Dropping 60 fps footage to 30 fps frees bits for sharper frames, which helps most in clips over a minute.

Can I compress a video to 10 MB without losing quality?

Only when the clip is short. Any re-encode to a much smaller size discards detail; the aim is to discard what viewers notice least. A 30-second clip at 10 MB looks nearly identical on a phone; a three-minute clip will not.

Should I remove the audio to get under 10 MB?

For a silent screen recording or a clip with only background noise, yes. Remove audio hands the picture almost 1 MB more per minute at 128 kbps. Keep the sound for anything where people talk, and lower Audio bitrate to 64 kbps instead.

Can several clips each be compressed to 10 MB at once?

Yes. Upload up to 20 videos and every one is compressed to its own 10 MB target, not to 10 MB in total.
